Days of Blood & Starlight by Laini Taylor

This is the sequel to Daughter of Smoke & Bone. I got this book as a Christmas present last year and I liked that book so much that I had to read the second book. I find the character Karou interesting because it describes how resurrection is real and that there are angels and a monster breed, Chimera.
Daughter of Smoke & Bone was mainly about Karou, who is an art student and draws monsters. She speaks so many languages. Her hair is naturally blue. On both palms of her hands, she has an eye. The book tells the story of who she really is and she eventually finds the truth about herself. It turns out this is her second life. Her first life, she lived as a chimera, a monster breed. Her name was Madrigal. But she was killed for loving the enemy, an angel named Akiva. Now she is living her second life. Not until the end of Daughter of Smoke & Bone does she remember her past, which was that she lived a first life. There was a wishbone, which she broke apart at the end of that book and instantly all her memories of her first life rushed into her head. She remembered she was Madrigal in her first life.  It was possible for Madrigal to come back into a second life of being Karou because the chimera have resurrectionists. A ressurrectionist used their own pain to make another Chimera body. After they do that, they can put a soul into that body and a chimera comes to life. The resurrectionist when Madrigal was alive was Brimstone, who then raised Karou in her second life. Anyway now I am reading the second book, Days of Blood & Starlight.  After Karou broke the wishbone, she remembered her past life and that she used to be a Kirin, one breed of the chimera. Also when she did break the wishbone, she realized that all the angels, including Akiva, killed all the Chimera. Now she hates her ex-lover Akiva for destroyed her family from her past life. She was devastated because her only 'family' who raised her was killed along with all her kind, the Chimera. She was so sad that Brimstone, who was like her 'father' was killed. Later, she realizes that another Chimera did survive. It was the White Wolf. Karou hates the White Wolf. He executed her for loving the enemy. Now White Wolf has persuaded Karou to be the new and only resurrectionist and create more Chimera. They are living in a desert in a secret hidden place. Her best friend, Zuzana, and her boyfriend came to find Karou after figuring out the clue Karou sent to them. Karou never thought Zuzana would find her, but Zuzana did come. Although Karou is full of joy that her friend came to her and help her with the Chimera, Karou is so upset and angry at the White Wolf because he has threatened to kill her friends if she doesn't cooperate and do everything he says for her to do. So Karou told her friends what the White Wolf said and Karou wanted them to leave immediately without anyone knowing. So Karou taught them how to use 'glamour', which gives you a little pain in order to turn invisible. Karou remembered when she was first taught how to use 'glamour', which was taught by her ex-angel lover, Akiva. However she quickly tried to forget that memory because she was still so angry and upset at him. However Karou does think 'glamour' is useful and she sometimes uses it when she wants to be undetectable from the other Chimera. Anyway she taught her friends 'glamour' and they left at night to go back to where they live and leave Karou to keep helping ressurect new Chimera.
Karou is puzzled because although she is a Chimera, she looks human, so all the other Chimera Karou has ressurected don't trust her. Mostly all the Chimera don't trust her because unknowingly, the White Wolf, who is the leader of the Chimera, said that Karou can't be trusted for loving the enemy and so the White Wolf ordered all the Chimera not to acknowledge her and not to speak with her. However Karou later finds out by Ziri, the last Kirin, a Chimera breed. Ziri and Karou are great friends because Ziri happens to be the only Chimera who trusts Karou, and Karou only trusts one Chimera, Ziri. Without Karou knowing, Ziri is in love with Karou. However, Ziri senses that although Karou says that she hates her ex-angel lover, Akiva, Ziri does believe Karou still has some feelings for Akiva, which makes it difficult for Ziri to tell Karou how he feels about her. In the meantime, Akiva regrets what he did to the Chimera breed and wishes to bring them all back, knowing that he can't because most of them are gone for good. Akiva is very much still in love with Karou and wants to find where she is at. For most of the first half of the book however, Akiva did believe that Karou was dead and he hated himself. Now he knows she is alive because he followed another Chimera back to the hidden Chimera place and flew in order to not be seen. He also was able not to be seen because he used his 'glamour'. When got to the hidden place, Akiva looked for Karou. When he first saw her, he sighed in relief and let out a big breath because he was so happy she was alive. He wanted to talk to her, so later at night when Karou was taking a walk by herself, he whispered out her name. She turned around a few times and didn't see anything because he was invisible, but finally when he turned off his 'glamour', she saw him and was so shocked to see him. Neither of them wanted to be heard by the other chimera back where everyone else was, so they talked quietly. Akiva was surprised that Karou was the ressurrectionist when she told him. Before Akiva left, he gave Karou a soul in a jar and told her that this Chimera would be someone who she presumed dead. After Karou recovered her shock that Akiva was in front of her, she started quietly yelling at him and said some cruel things to him. He then left because he knew that Karou was still angry and upset at him. Later Karou went back and ressurected the Chimera. It turned out that it was Issa, another Chimera. Although Issa was not Karou's mother, Karou though of her like a mother because Issa was family to Karou and Issa raised Karou. The White Wolf questions both Issa and Karou about how Issa came back because she and her soul were presumed to be gone forever. However they just said that Karou found it with all the other souls in bottles. Issa then gathers all the Chimera together and says she has a message from Brimstone, the old ressurectionist, and the other Chimera leader everyone respected. So Issa said what Brimstone's message was. Then Karou added and asked everyone what they were really fighting for. The White Wolf answered saying they wanted revenge and wanted to kill off all the angels in order for the Chimera breed to be protected. However Karou said that both her, Brimstone, and Issa didn't think that would help and thought that they should just live their lives and not keep sending all the Chimera soldiers on suicide missions to kill angels. The White Wolf intervenes and ends the conversation saying that we need to get revenge on the ones who killed mostly all the Chimera. The White Wolf sends everyone off and ends this gathering. He is very mad at Karou and later at night tells her to come alone so they can talk about what happened. When she comes he is very angry and starts yelling at her. She yells back and then the White Wolf pins her down. She tries to fight back. With difficulty, she grabs a small knife from her boot without the White Wolf knowing and then she cuts his throat. He lets go of her because he suddenly realizes he isn't able to breathe. Karou then crawls out from under him and starts crying and shakily tries to get herself together because she knows the White Wolf just 'tried' to rape her. Fortunately he didn't and she was able to defend herself, although that meant killing him. Then other things happen and after there is a third book coming soon.
